I Hung an Eucalyptus Bunch in My Shower for Years and Saw Surprising Results
I never expect eucalyptus to become such a cozy part of my home. I grow it in my backyard because a friend gives me a small potted plant on my birthday years ago.
At that time, I place it near the fence without thinking much about it. I simply like the shape of the leaves and the soft silver-green color, and I hope it survives our weather. Gradually, the plant grows taller and fuller, and every time I brush past it, the scent lifts gently into the air.

One afternoon, while trimming a few branches, I catch a strong, clean smell from the leaves, and an idea comes to me. I think about how calming it would be to bring that scent indoors.
That’s the moment I decide to try hanging a eucalyptus bunch in my shower, and honestly, I don’t expect much. I think it will just look pretty. What I don’t realize is how much it will change the way my bathroom feels.
I Gather the Eucalyptus From My Backyard

Whenever I need a new bunch, I walk out to the backyard with scissors and a small basket. I choose stems that look healthy and long enough to hang nicely.
Usually, I cut around six to eight branches, depending on how full I want the bunch. I try not to take too much from one side of the plant so it keeps growing evenly.
As soon as I gather the stems together, the scent becomes stronger. The leaves feel cool and smooth, and the smell is a mix of fresh, minty, and herbal. It is different from the strong bottled scents you find at the store.
I Tie the Bunch

Inside the kitchen, I spread the branches on the counter and arrange them so the fuller stems sit in the back and the shorter ones layer on top.
I use plain twine because it holds well and looks simple. Then I wrap the twine tightly around the base of the stems several times and tie a secure knot.
I leave a small loop of twine at the top so I can hang it easily. The bunch doesn’t need to look perfect; in fact, the more natural it looks, the more I like it. The leaves hang in different directions and create a soft, relaxed shape.
Next I Hang It in the Shower

I take the bunch into the bathroom and hang it behind the showerhead, high enough so my little one can’t reach it.
I keep it away from the direct stream of water because the steam, not the water, is what helps release the scent. Once everything is in place, the whole bathroom suddenly looks a little greener and calmer, even before I turn on the water.
During the first shower, I don’t notice much at first. But as the steam builds, the eucalyptus warms up, and the smell slowly spreads through the whole room.
It feels like a small, gentle cloud of freshness that doesn’t hit me all at once. Instead, it rises little by little until the whole shower feels relaxing in a simple, natural way.
What I Start Noticing After Using It for Years
After using eucalyptus bunches in my shower for many years now, I see the smell always lifts the mood of the bathroom, even during busy mornings when everything feels rushed. It makes the room feel like a tiny spa without needing to buy anything extra.
I also notice that the air in the bathroom feels fresher, especially after long baths or humid days. Even when the bunch dries completely, it still gives off a light scent when the steam hits it.
Whenever the leaves lose their scent entirely, I replace them with fresh branches from the backyard.
What surprises me most is how the bunch affects my daily routine. Instead of feeling like I’m just jumping in and out of the shower, the eucalyptus makes the whole experience calmer.
I Keep Doing This Many Times
I continue making eucalyptus bunches because they’re simple, natural, and surprisingly comforting. I don’t need to buy candles, sprays, diffusers, or anything expensive. Everything comes from my own backyard, and the only tools I need are scissors and twine.
More than anything, hanging eucalyptus in my shower reminds me that small, thoughtful things can change the feeling of a home.
It doesn’t take much time, it doesn’t require skill, and it doesn’t create waste. It’s just a small habit that brings a soft, refreshing scent into a space I use every day.
